Hands-on gear & build talk.

The drawers project started off with construction of a "base plate" that will be attached to the LX, and will hold the drawers themselves. The base plate was made from 1/2" baltic birch plywood, and the frame from 3/4". Cut-outs were added for some minor weight savings.
The drawers' top is just below the tailgate lip, and they are secured with turnbuckles.
The top itself is two pieces of 3/4" plywood.
I applied Minwax's Dark Walnut stain to the frame, and carpeted the top pieces in outdoor carpet.
Since I wanted to maximize drawer room, while minimizing weight & expenses, I chose to use low-friction, HDPE plastic as the "sliding mechanism," rather than traditional heavy-duty drawer slides.
I also recessed and mounted three L-tracks into the tops: these allow for countless cargo tie-down options.
The drawers themselves were constructed from 1/2" plywood, and were similarly protected with outdoor carpet. Southco latches lock the drawers in place.
